Art aficionados will feel right at home when roaming downtown Jacksonville’s engaging art scene. For the last nine years, around 6,000 visitors each month flock the city for its annual First Wednesday Art Walk, an astounding visual and live art showcase spanning more than 15 city blocks. Over 40 galleries, museums, cultural venues, restaurants, bars, and businesses take part in this free, self-guided tour. Expect spots like Downtown Cigar Lounge, Champblin’s Uptown, Burrito Gallery, and Watercolors by Chris Flagg, to name a few.
Rain or shine, dozens of emerging and established artists will line up in Hemming Plaza as part of the monthly event. Beginning February 5, patrons can browse an eclectic mix of works spanning a range of specialties, including fiber arts, mixed media, painting, photography, drawing, and sculpture. Plus, you can also snag a number of handmade accessories and unique jewelry items, too—not to mention ultra cool recycled art from Transient Moose Handcrafted. With dozens of options for new keepsakes, Art Walk just might be the perfect place to find those final pieces for your ever-growing collection.
The free, self-guided tour allows patrons to roam about downtown at will, stopping to talk to artists and to purchase pieces along the way. Other highlights include over 10 live music and performances venues as well as a number of after-hour hot spots that open at 9:00pm. Best of all, getting around downtown is easier than ever with more than 40,000 parking spaces and multiple public transportation options available. Just hail a cab, hop on Skyway, or take the bus.

For 22 years, Atlantic Beach has been welcoming party goers for its annual Gloucester Mardi Gras festival. Modeled after southwest Louisiana’s RURAL Mardi Gras, this all-day event features plenty of the usual celebratory antics as well as a few locally inspired ones. Expect copious amounts of food, bands, and bead tossing, for example. You’ll also find mask- and hat-making booths, perfect for creating the ideal hat to accompany your outfit (preferably costume for those wanting to get into the spirit of the holiday!).
This year’s event-scheduled for February 15-begins early Saturday morning with live music. Afterward, you and the rest of the family can load up on some delicious grub, including gumbo, deep-fried turkey, crawfish, and some delectable side dishes, too. Around 3:00pm, Unknown Tongues will take the stage to kick off the remainder of the festival. Deep-rooted in their love of Cajun music, this four-person group embraces Louisiana-style Zydeco and continues to evolve with each new instrument and musician added to the ever-changing band.
After Unknown Tounges’ set list wraps up, your little one can join in on the fun with the children’s King and Queen coronation as well as a march and bead toss. Of course, feel free to bring along your own instrument, too, if the mood strikes you; attendees are encouraged to partake in the festival’s ongoing shenanigans. Plus, the event is free to the public in part for helping keep the Unknown Tongues afloat. So come, eat, and celebrate the arrival of Mardi Gras during this all-out affair.
