- Since this inaugural event began in 1974, spectators and golf enthusiasts have come to recognize The Players Championship as one of the most highly anticipated tournaments among the PGA Tour. Held at TPC at Sawgrass, this one-of-a-kind course was designed for those who play and those who watch.
The PGA Tour hoped to improve the fan experience during tournaments in addition to making TPC at Sawgrass accessible to amateur and professional golfers alike. Pete Dye, who created the course, designed it with the intention that the course would be somewhat of a gamble — never really favoring a particular player’s style of play.
Beginning Saturday, May 4th, runners and walkers can get a behind-the-scenes look at TPC Sawgrass during THE PLAYERS 5K with Donna bright and early at 7:30. Then, grab a sneak peek at the latest and greatest golf products to hit the market with Golf Digest and its Hot List until 5 p.m.
Monday through Wednesday, May 6th – 8th, remain as practice rounds for the professionals before the first round of competition on Thursday. The gates open at 6:30 a.m., and competition begins an hour after. The following three days of tournament play help to round out the match’s completion, finishing up with its final round and closing ceremony on Sunday, May 12th.
Undeniably, TPC at Sawgrass is most frequently identified with its signature hole — the 17th. This par-3, 132-yard hole is one of the most recognizable and difficult holes in golf today. To golf fans, it’s simply known as the “Island Green,” and consists of a mere 78-foot green that’s completely surrounded by water. An estimated 100,000 balls are retrieved each year from the nearby lake.
Come see the pros during this unforgettable tournament in the Florida sunshine. Bask in the glory of the 17th hole, or grab a bite while overlooking the greens. Golf enthusiasts from across the globe flock to this event to watch professionals vie for the biggest purse on the PGA Tour.
